This English musician / singer / songwriter and member of one of the most popular rock n’ roll bands around, the Arctic Monkeys, has properly won the crown for Elise’s King of 2014! The Arctic Monkeys have won over 20 awards, 7 of them being Brit Awards.
“That rock and roll, eh? That rock and roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swap. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules. But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock and roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it…”
-Alex Turner’s acceptance speech at the 2014 Brit Awards
And what an outstanding speech, am I right? There should be a special “Hall of Alex Turner” for this speech. (Okay, I am exaggerating, but look at that fine face of his, that in itself deserves an award.)
Alex Turner became involved with music from the very start, as a child he took piano lessons and as a teenager became interested in guitar when The Strokes became popular. He was also very inspired by The Beatles, the first worldwide British Rock band. Before the Arctic Monkeys, Turner worked at The Boardwalk in Sheffield as a barman. He also said that if the Arctic Monkeys hadn’t gone anywhere, he’d be studying English at Manchester University. Imagine that, Alex Turner sitting next to you in class, leaning over, and asking if you by chance have an extra pencil he could borrow in that sweet, thick accent of his.
The Arctic Monkeys have released 5 albums since they came together in 2002, their most recent album AM was released in 2013 and from then on their career skyrocketed. I was lucky enough to have gone to their concert in February —- and let me tell you, craziest concert I have ever been; the crowd was wild, the band was phenomenal, and I was even luckier to score 3rd row. I’d have to say their best songs to have seen live was Brianstorm, I Wanna Be Yours, and I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor.
Here are the vote totals for all of the nominees: Alex Turner - 47% Leonardo DiCaprio - 25% One Direction - 16% Eddie Redmayne - 8% Justin Timberlake - 4%
